Computer Keyboard Revolution

When we talk about keyboard layout, we will think about QWERTY keyboard layout which was invented by Christopher Sholes 1868. Why, because we are trained to use QWERTY keyboards without any questionings. About 15 years ago, I still remembered that I had to paid for attending typing classes to learn how to use QWERTY keyboard without asking why each key has be to arranged in this specific layout.

Right now, with more and more PDA cellular phones with QWERTY keyboards released into the market, it is the right time to justify whether we should stat with QWERTY keyboard forever as typing on the small keyboard on a PDA Phone doesn’t really work well because of limited space.

Please leave your comment below if you think QWERTY keyboard do or doesn’t work well on small limited space environment such as on PDA or cellular phone.

I used to use qwerty, then one day a friend showed me Dvorak. Dvorak layout was so much better! It took about 30 days for me to re-learn the new key layout. It feels so amazingly better to type with too. I had sore and “tired” wrists all the time before I switched, but now, it greatly went down. They are still a bit tired but nowhere NEAR as bad as they used t be. Right now I’m looking into a better keyboard than the standard flat shape. I want one that keeps my hands at a slope, though it will be a pain for one handed typing I imagine.

Dvorak is built into Windows and linux, probably mac, it requires no software or special hardware, Give it a try. You’ll be happy you did.

for windows XP, open control panel, find regional and language settings, go to languages tab, click Details, add US Dvorak. You may want to find a picture showing the new layout.

At first you won’t be able to type well at all, but if you give yourself time and use it anyway, you’ll be amazed at how much better it is than Qwerty in both speed and comfort.

Dvorak’s home row … aoeuidhtns- lets you type a lot of words without moving fingers much at all
